Troubled waters: Water availability drives human-baboon encounters in a protected, semi-arid landscape

چکیده
Most animal habitats are affected by humans. While some species tolerate and even benefit from these changes, others suffer. Understanding when how human-altered landscapes affect behavior, health, reproduction, survival is essential to management in a human-dominated world. Here we use 27 years of data on human-baboon encounters protected, semi-arid ecosystem Kenya to: (i) identify spatial, environmental, group-level predictors baboon with pastoralists; (ii) test whether human-built water sources alter ranging patterns; (iii) if human linked survival, health. We find that the primary driver availability. During dry periods, pastoralists migrate into rangelands, leading frequent encounters, especially near wells. Further, baboons shift their ranges encompass newly built wells move away abandoned, dried-up Since 2006, third adult deaths were violent humans or dogs. Human also high infant mortality parasite diversity females (but this effect could not be disentangled seasonal confounds). For wild baboons, life pastoralist conservancies presents double-edged sword: enable access during but lead humans, which have become common source mortality. Together, our results serve as comprehensive case study anthropogenic effects primates, highlighting complex interactions between wildlife protected areas.

Severe range degradation was critically extended in many region of Iran and caused many rangelands were restricted and interwoven with croplands in a complex system. Therefore, rangeland planning and inventory as an isolated activity has become almost impossible. Current landscape planning involves contributions of different social organizations often with different interests and with different...

Lung transplantation (LTx) remains the only therapeutic strategy for the treatment of end-stage respiratory failure in selected patients [1,2]. However, clinical scenario of LTx is rapidly changing. Two aspects still characterize LTx in comparison with the transplant of other solid organs. First, only a limited number of lung grafts is considered suitable for transplant within the donors’ pool....
متن کاملNiches of common bryophytes in a semi-arid landscape
The Santa Monica Mountains, adjacent to the Pacific Ocean just west of Los Angeles, California, have low elevation, high relief and a Mediterranean climate. To date 122 species of bryophytes have been found, especially in the moist drainages. Species that were common (about half of the 122) were compared in terms of microhabitat variables (substrate softness, moisture, slope and shadiness) and ...

either by changing the ice sheet's basal thermal regime or by introducing water into the path of the ice stream through periodic drainage events. If this proves to be the case, it would substantially change our understanding of the effect of subglacial lakes on ice-sheet stability. It indicates that basal hydrology needs to be accounted for in numerical models of ice-sheet motion because it has...
